Today operating systems are very powerful and each operating system uses plenty of processes to provide a smooth user interface. Windows, Linux, and Mac provides features like Hibernate, sleep, log off and lock for faster access.
Hibernate:
Hibernation is faster and effective way to boot the computer. Operating system copies the RAM memory into HDD before shutting down the computer, Exact opposite operation is done on next startup. Hibernating the computer is faster and safer way to protect the data on which user is working with. On next startup, computer resumes at an exact same condition where the user left it.
Before Windows 8, hibernation was used to prevent data loss in notebook/laptop computers whenever battery drains.
[NOTE: ]
- To hibernate your Linux computer you need to install hibernate using a terminal.
- To hibernate/sleep the Windows computer you need to install Graphics driver. (For Windows XP, Vista, 7)
Lock:
In lock state of the computer, the Operating System locks the computer and ask for a password to access the computer. The main advantage of locking the computer is that unauthorized access can be prevented without affecting the running operations.
Locking the computer also allows other users to log in, this allows the second user to access a computer without affecting the work of the first user.
Log off:
Logging off / logging out the computer terminates all the user operations and locks the computer. Logging off the computer allows the second user to log in without restarting the computer.
Sleep:
On sleep, Operating System pauses the all running operations and locks the computer. On wake up the user needs to be authenticated to resume the operations.
- Sleeping the computer is faster than hibernate but it does not shut down the computer completely.
- You can sleep the computer when you need to go away from your computer/notebook for some time and wanted to save power.
- Computer wakes up from sleep a lot faster which saves the time of the user.
Bonus tips:
- Windows automatically locks the computer after 10 minutes of inactivity. (In balanced power mode).
- When the user presses the power button/closes the notebooks lid Windows computer goes to the sleep mode.
- Pressing the power button for 5 seconds forces the computer to shut down. (same as pulling the wall plug)
- In windows computer, you can change these settings in Control Panel.
- In Linux computer, you can change these settings in settings application.
